Yesterday there was a post in the Nokia Facebook page about firmware V30 for N97. At present there is no information but according to them V30 is going to rock, and it’ll be released this summer.

nokia_n97_white

It’s true that V21 solved most of the problems N97 users were facing and V30 could really improve the performance and user experience.

I’ve got a list of changes and features I want to see in V30 –

  1. Include the latest version of Quickoffice in the firmware itself.
  2. Make Adobe Reader free. (I’ve already bought it, so it doesn’t matter much)
  3. Integrate Maps into the firmware.
  4. Integrate Nokia Messaging into the firmware as in E72 and improve it’s performance.
  5. Remove Download and Boingo. (I’m using Joikuspot and Qik, so they can stay)
  6. Fix the ‘back’ button problem in music player and please include some visualizations.
  7. Throw in some glitz, transition effects and it should not affect the performance.
  8. Make gallery a little faster, especially the ‘Tags’ section.
  9. Xvid, Divx support?
  10. Internet radio.
  11. Latest version of Ovi Store in firmware itself. (and finally, the most important)
  12. Please increase the C drive memory.

Did I miss anything? Can you think of something else that needs to be added to this list?

1 – indeed. (And should be the full, not just the view-only.)
2 – might not matter much to you personally, but imo it's a freakin' outrage that even a stupid reader is a trial-only, and then you can't even remove it. So yeh, needs fixage ASAP. -.-'''
    3 & 4 – agreed.
5 – remove Download! for sure; give us the option to remove both Boingo, Joikuspot, Qik, and Vlingo. I've said it already, they're useful for about half of the users, the other half totally ignores them so they're only wasting screen estate in the menu. Not to mention not even all of them are free/full versions again… DO NOT NEED CRAPWARE TRIALS IN A FREAKIN' FLAGSHIP. Period.
6 – and the Back button in the App. manager too (same effect for me as in the Music player).
    7 – this should've been made first point. O_O
8 – and give back the “Organize” feature in the menu, I hate having to go to the File manager to organize my photos. T_T Also, either get rid of the “Videos & TV” icon in the main menu, or stop the “Photos” app displaying video thumbnails too. Illogical much?
9 – what's with the question mark at the end? :D “DivX/XviD support.” Period. :D
10 – INDEED, for cryin' out loud!
    11 – wouldn't be a disadvantage.
    12 – software can't fix a hardware problem, sadly… :/

    What I'd definitely add:
    a) speed tweaks for the Music player as well as Disc # and Album artist IDtag support
    b) at least a face recognition feature for the camera; but if not that, at least speed tweaks for geotagging (how Maps locks onto my position in 5 secs and the Camera needs 30-120 secs is a mystery to me), and it wouldn't be bad if it displayed the location when showing the picture like the N900 does
    c) smart dial support
    d) languages support (still baffled at how you can download for example Japanese dictionary to the device but it only displays little squares instead of the actual characters…)
…that's all I can think of atm.

The one thing off the top of my head that I would like to see changed/added is better organization in the Music Player.

For instance, 90% of the time I listen to music, I want all of my tracks in a random rotation. But that doesn't mean that I might not want to isolate a particular album or genre for a few tracks. Currently, if I am listening to all of my music on shuffle and want to hear a few songs of a similar genre, I have to navigate away from the 'all songs' list and go to the 'genre' list (which of course brings up the hassle of the 'back button bug' if I'm starting out from the homescreen). Now, after hearing enough of the same kind of tunes I might want to go back to my whole collection on random. Again I have to navigate through a couple menus before I can do that (not to mention that each time I navigate away, I have to stop the song currently playing and pick another song out of the new list to start playing).

In short, I'd like to organize the 'all songs' list anyway I want, not just alphabetically by track name. If I want to listen to all songs that have the word 'rock' in their title, artist, album, or genre, I can't (think of different genres that you may have in your collection: hard 'rock', alternative 'rock', classic 'rock').

Along this same line of thinking, at the very least allow me to search in the 'all songs' list for an artist or album name. If I want to start my shuffled music day with some Slayer, I have to first remember the track names of all eight albums I have, then think of which one I want to listen to.

Basically I'd like the Music Player to have more functionality when searching for music (I hate to say it, but think iTunes' search ability). It would help a lot, especially for those of us with large libraries. Shoot, mine's not even the biggest, only 1700+ songs! I could easily fit twice that much again in my N97, but I wouldn't dare for fear of never being able to listen to what I want, how I want! XP

    I did forget one thing!

For sure the pointless use of large menu buttons needs to go. Specifically (and in other apps as well), I am thinking of the menu buttons in the native web browser. With resistive touch screens you don't need over-huge buttons, especially when it cuts down your screen size by a third! I think they can afford to lose at least half of the real estate that those buttons take up, giving more space to your screen.

And yet another…(by the way, I love my N97 and will probably have it for at least a couple years)

I'd like the icons/apps that I have organized in my menus to stay WHERE THEY ARE when I switch to landscape view. Just let the little buggers 'rotate' so to speak so that they are in the same exact place as I put them, not in a different spot but same order. That kind of bugs.

    Okay, that's it! hahaha

agree with you. I'm currently using Playlist DJ app to do some kind of shuffling with the tracks. And I think you can type directly in ” All songs” to search but then it searches only tracks.

  • vinitneo

Maemo has done a good thing here, it does not have menu buttons.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I'm interested in checking out maemo…I've heard a lot of good things and I know almost nothing about it. Even though I wouldn't buy an N900, I bet it's pretty slick.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Funny you should mention playlist DJ…I have an article coming up soon about it on n97fanatics. Great app, tons of potential, but it's just missing a few key ingredients.

  • vinitneo

I'm very interested to read that article.

Do NOT put anything in Firmware!!!!!

Let it all go to E:

    I Hate Fixed Firmware software!!!!!

  • Disturbed

yes you missed the most important thing ,which is more important as what you said ,its the flash player 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vinitneo

It is unlikely that flash 10 would come in N97. I'm not even sure if N97 would be able to handle flash 10 files. but it is coming in Nokia N8

  • http://louyblog.wordpress.com/ Louy

The most important for me is a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard like in 5800 and X6… :D
And the C driver is really important too, how ever i'm not runnin out of memory right now :P

  • vinitneo

yes the full qwerty onscreen keyboard has been requested by many people.
Nokia isn't giving us an onscreen qwerty keyboard because we already a
keyboard and btw how much memory is left in your c drive?

  • http://louyblog.wordpress.com/ Louy

It's really bad that it wouldn't give us the keyboard :(
how ever i had 30MB left on C two days ago.. but now i have only 13 :S

  • Phdraye

Make the damn thing responsive, stable and find all my music. In other words, transform this RAM-starved paper weight into something that looks remotely like a phone and/or a music player. Also, compensate me for the hard reset and the loss of my quick office and Adobe Reader as I had the choice between the hard reset and connecting the initial OVI Suite which gave error messages even crazier than the N97 itself. Hello Nokia! GET LOST!!!

  • vinitneo

Have you updated to version 21? it has more ram available. 54 after boot. and the device performs reasonably. Sadly no other changes in the rest of the software, everything else remains the same. Hopefully, V30 will be better and bring changes which everyone is asking for.

  • vinitneo

it won't decrease the size of phone memory buddy… so it's better if everything came with the firmware.

  • Dansharpy

um 1 MAJOR thing missed!! Multi homescreens!! Im fed up of having to change widgets because i havent got enough space for everything! And i fully agree with MajorDouble7 on the icons just rotating when going into landscape mode, them moving places is VERY annoying!! Does anyone have any better idea when this update will be released yet??

  • vinitneo

The answer is never.. multiple home screen is the major new feature of N8… I don't think they will port it to N97.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I agree…it has become painfully obvious that the N97 just doesn't have
the capacity for multiple homescreens. Same reason we never got animated
transitions when going from portrait to landscape…super bummer.

  • vinitneo

Even the most low end phones have the theme effects but N97 doesn't. What a shame.

  • Dansharpy

Dont get me wrong i love my N97 and would still choose it over anything apple (or anyone else!) have released, i do think however it was a bit of a 'run before they could walk' device! I am now looking forward though! N8 on the horizon and rumours of the N9 now as well! As im sure many N97 owners are facing the same thing who brought it when it was first released- UPGRADE TIME!! I wouldnt mind your views on this one MD7, N8 or wait and see what the N9 has to offer? From the reports ive seen so far, which are of course rumours, it has an 8MP camera instead of the 12MP on the N8 and less memory!! Thoughts???

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Far too much speculation and hearsay to make any kind of a choice. I think
that's one of the things that helped sink the N97; Great Expectations.

In any case, I am excited about the N8, and would love to see if it really
comes out the way Nokia says it will. I love my N97 as well, and will
likely keep it for a long while, but if N8 is all it's purported, then I
might be third in line (never first in line again with Nokia…I don't want
to beta test their products). Well, I guess we'll see…

I think it was @tehkseven_jon who suggested that Nokia give some sort of
rebate to N97 owners who purchase an N8. His reasoning and projected
benefits for both parties were impressive.

  • vinitneo

yes. I too still like my N97… it's just that I like some other smartphones better. The major bummer for me was the lack of support by services and lack of developer attention – check out this post – http://vinitneo.com/2010/03/a-symbian-client/ – N8 looks really good but some of the problems I have with it is – N8 is looking like a solid device now but then so did N97 when it was announced.
N8 is an end of the line smartphone, similar to the N900 – there is no official confirmation if it would be upgraded to Symbian 4. As N8 and Symbian is end of the line, I don't think developers would pay much attention to it…. so we'd still end up envying the apps that iPhone and Android has. Features wise N8 still lags behind iPhone and Android. N8 has the best camera, no doubt about it but would I be satisfied with an awesome camera alone?

    ———————————————
The phone shown as N9 was actually E7 and it has an 8MP camera. It didn't look that good or polished but that might be because it is a pre pre production built.
———————– The actuall N9 is going to have Meego OS but we have no idea how that is going to end up and how the market, media and developer reaction to it wold be.

  • vinitneo

I too am excited about N8 but I'm not sure I'd buy it… I want to experience android. yes it is true in one way – people had lots of expectations on the N97, it sadly didn't live up to it.

@tehkseven_jon and Symbian Guru had suggest a good think – Nokia should take back the N97s and give a rebate to the owners who buy N8.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Oh yeah, you are right…it was Ricky, not Jon that suggested the trade for N97s and N8s. I still think it's a grand idea. If N8 turns out to be what it is supposed to be, I'd trade my N97 and maybe hundred bucks for an N8…maybe. I still really REALLY like having a physical keyboard…one of the big reasons I went with N97. And N8 is capacitive touch isn't it? I'm not sure I dig capacitive. I'm used to resistive and I think it has some great aspects that capacitive just can't match. I could be wrong. My only experience with capacitive is the dread iToy, so who knows.

    MD 7

  • vinitneo

The idea of trade-back is great but I don't think it will happen but it will be beneficial to Nokia in the long run.

  • Shahnawaz Pasha

I didn’t get whole softwares for my mobile N97, I lost facebook, games which were preinstalled. How to get all softwares for my handset in original one. I had tried every thing which were posible.

  • Rhyn Weatherhead

Ditto to all of the above. Make the frikken C: bigger. Phone is a joke…my old N82 has 120mb C: and runs faster how I dont know…it kills my n97.
Make all apps Removeable: usual boingo vligo joikespot qik Fm transmit Msg Reader
Install Maps onto Mass storage allow everyting to go onto mass storge or make C: at least 300mb !

  • Calvinalfrednicholas

    Its not out yet?

  • Anonymous

it is not and it never will be as Nokia has completely ignored N97 and are not developing anything for it.
